Art: Fatima Mazmouz

Gallerie FJ (Fatma Jellal) has organised an exhibition of controversial artist Fatima Mazmouz. Fatima explores the perception of the female human body in its own culture, Islam. One of her major works is the study of her own pregnancy through a series of photographs, always shocking and beautiful at the same time. The shapes, colors, textures, and subject matter provides insight beyond words, offering a window into the past, and a microcosmic view of the issues and experiences that shape so many women in Morocco today.

Dance: Work is all the time in progress

Spend a pleasant evening in Casablanca watching the eclectic art of the group "work is all the time in progress" a joint venture of the brothers Atbane, Younes and Zouhir, plus newcomer Aziz Nadif; inspired and educated under the master choreographer Khalid Benghrib.
Their art is a mix of contemporary dance and music always in search of new forms of expression. They arise questions about the social problems of becoming an artist in Morocco, challenging our minds but always with a humoristic touch.

Free concert in Cervantes Casablanca

If you enjoy free activities in Casablanca have a look from time to time here at www.casamood.net, we have some good plans to propose. For instance the next Friday 21th of March there is an open concert in Instituto Cervantes: Abdelkader Naji, Trio Arabesque and duo Elvire with Michel Gendre. The flavour will be tipical spanish Flamenco with a touch of medieval oud; all of the musicians are winners of several prizes of guitar and chord instruments. Abdelkader is an accomplished guitarrist and also the organiser of the "Festival International de Cordes Pincées de Tours" and  the "Festival International de Guitare Mosaïque de Casablanca ". The three components of Trio Arabesque, Assma Rachidi, Redouane Saioud and Hicham Madane all come from the conservatory of Rabat and each of them excel in their art. Michel Gendre is the most famous oud player in the whole France, specialises in old music and music of the Renaissance, and will play along the gorgeous Elvira a collection of sephardic music that will for sure move the audience.

Dont miss this concert: L'Esprit de Grenade

How to spend an evening without breaking the bank in Casablanca? Very easy thanks to our friends in the French Institute. Inside the specials of SIEL Casablanca (the famous book exhibition) there are events almost everyday. This concert is one not to miss. Françoise Atlan et l’orchestre arabo-andalous de Fès will be most likely amazing, especially due to the reduced size of the theater we are sure it will make the whole auditorium vibrate. Françoise Atlan explores with her judeo-arabic music themes that unfortunately are not in fashion anymore: respect, tolerance, cohabitation of religion and credos. She has been in the famous Fez Festival of Sacred Music and other festivals like les Suds à Arles or the Festival d’art lyrique d’Aix-en-Provence, and she is also the artistic director of the Festival des Andalousies Atlantiques of Essaouira.

Reading and Acting: Othello, The Moor of Venice

What to do in Casablanca when the sun does not want to shine? Villa des Arts has come to the rescue with a series of theatrical readings acted by no more than 3 people. If we really enjoyed the last one, The Little Prince, the next 18 of March we can suffer along with Othello, The Moor of Venice, a well known tragedy written by William Shakespeare around 1603. Othello is one of those pieces that never go out of fashion, since the main themes of racism, love, jealousy and betrayal, are unfortunately as alive today as 500 years ago. Basically is the story of Othello, and admired moorish prince, resident of Venice, equally respected and hated for its military conquests. If anyone out there hasnt read or seen any of the thousand adaptations on screen and theater we suggest upgrading their soul for a little 20 dhs and enjoy this very intense piece of art.
Organised by Hassan El Jaï, actor and theater teacher along with the Compagnie l’Aparté.

Concert: "Le Soleil Brille pour Tout le Monde?"

Time to go out in Casablanca. The French Institute is bringing us a music concert that is worth skipping the afterwork mojitos. The poetry of Jacques Prevert meets the irreverence of slam music, the result? You'll see.
Autodidact, born in Marseille, Frédéric Nevchehirlian began captivating thanks to its glowing words in parties "open mic" at the dawn of French slam. Then in concerts with his original group Vibrion (that was awarded discovery Printemps de Bourges 2005 FAIR 2008). Poetry pressed and compressed, abundant and rich at the same time, linking images that mark. Frederic uses
acoustic and electric guitar, cello and drums, and sings, shouts, whispers or declaims depending on the interpreted text.

Inspiring and fun theater in Casablanca: Dialy

Le Studio des Arts Vivants has decided to break all taboos with this piece of theater that will be represented the 8th of February in its premises. We apologise for the short notice, but sometimes its complicated to find the source of information. Dialy is the moroccan version of the world famous "The Vagina Monologues" written by Eve Ensler in 1996 and that have ever since has shocked -and inspired- audiences. Dialy is the result of the conversations between 150 women in its more intimate experiences, everyday life, sexual life, hammam time etc.. part cheeky and insolent, the piece on stage is not necessarily welcomed on the first place but the public grows little by little so it comes to appreciate the message beyond . Vagina, a word that bothers because it refers to all the taboos of our society, and specially in Morocco. The word, without even knowing what the play is about in reality, challenges and disturbs the spirits who see the subversive if not indecent. Dialy is a total must for everyone who whishes to live with us here in 2014, and wants to develop a healthy relation with its own body and the very fabric of society.
The piece will be acted in darija, the colloquial moroccan language, with subtitles in french for the less fluents like yours truly.
Reading: Dialy by Cie Theatre Aquarium (with the support of The French Institute) Text: Maha SANO Directed by: Naima ZITAN
Actresses: Nuria Benbrahim; Farida Bouazzaoui; Amal Ben Haddou
Tickets on sell on the same Studio des Arts Vivants, at 200 dhs

What to see in Casablanca: Villa des Arts

Looking for the perfect place for a romantic date? Forget all the coffee shops and snob terraces, bring your date to the Villa des Arts for an special meeting that will last in your memories: "in our first date, Mustapha took me to a museum", sounds better to me than "we went to starbucks". Villa des Arst is a heavenly place in the very center of Casablanca, and they usually have on show nice exhibitions...and barely anyone looking at them. Split in two floors, this old Art Deco house, that dates from 1934, has also a permanent cute collection, and belongs now to the ONA Foundation. The place promotes contemporary art and other purposes, if you want you can even rent it for a party in the most pure Gatsby style. The garden is specially peaceful and we miss not having a little coffee shop on the side which be truly amazing. The entry is free and makes a good stop for tourists and residents alike.

Theater in Casablanca: La Chute (The Fall)

Good plans in Casablanca thanks to the French Institute. La Chute (The Fall) is the third novel of Albert Camus, written in the shape of dramatic monologues: a stranger tell us the story of his life from success to misery in an analogy that englobes the whole human race. This was one of the favourite pieces of another existencialist, the great Sartre, and we are looking forward to see how the director Nabyl Lahlou and actress Sophia Hadi will pull this one out, since is not an easy piece.

Beautiful Modern Dance: Khatwa in the French Institute

If you're looking for the best things to do in Casablanca, once again our friends from the Institut Français are bringing us all the freshness and energy of young Moroccan artists. This Saturday 18th of January is the turn of Khatwa, a dancing show with all the beauty -and confussion- of a contemporary choreography. In this show, the Macadama Company explores the boundaries of Hip Hop in a ritual that mixes oriental and contemporary moves. Unveil the mistery this Saturday at 20h30 in the premises of the French Institute. Most likely it will not be free, but do not expect to pay more than 50dhs.

Most Useful Map of Casablanca

If you dont want to get lost in the streets of Casablanca but at the same time you are not very good reading maps dont worry, we found the solution. We found and antique map of Casablanca from the times when it used to be called Anfa in 1572 (today Anfa is just a district); equally useful for children, right-brained people and general screeming wifes on the passenger seat, with this old map of Casablanca you will fully enjoy the metropolis.

Piano Concert: Mourad & Minh in Cervantes

Lately the Instituto Cervantes of Casablanca has been spoiling us with outstanding concerts in the most different styles. This time the Cervantes proposes a repertoire of classical music by Spanish composers Granados, Toldra, Turina, Falla ... with a voice and a piano.
Abderrahim Mourad -the voice- studied at the Conservatory of Casablanca and the Conservatorio Superior de Madrid. He is a soloist in the choir of Rabat since 1993.
Tran Thi Hong Minh is a piano teacher and concertist. She has a Master of piano from the Conservatory of Hanoi.
As usual the show is completely free and it will probably be quite crowded, so arriving in advance is recommended. 18th of December at 20h00 in the Instituto Cervantes.

Concert: "Astrio" in Cervantes

Astrio is addictive. It is difficult to find in Spain's music scene a direct band so appealing, powerful, distinctive and surprising as this group of excellent musicians. Never mind that the setlist remains unchanged, every show is different. With a solid musical education Arecio Smith (keyboard), Santi Serratosa (drummer) y Santi Careta (guitar) create an electro-jazz difficult to catalogue yet incredibly appealing, and thanks to Instituto Cervantes Casablanca we will all be able to enjoy their music next Wednesday 11th of December at 20h00. So do not miss it.
Free entrance.

Documentary: "Intangible Heritage", in the French Institute

Next Thursday 21th of November the French institute will show the documentary "Saisir un patrimoine inmateriel" (Searching for an Intangible Heritage), a film by Laurence Scarbonchi about what exactly is this Intangible Heritage and why is so important to keep it. A round table will follow with Ahmed Skounti. A list created by UNESCO to protect endangered traditions, in the Intangible Heritage you can find the spanish dance flamenco, the  chinese shadows theatre, the portuguese fado or even the Jemaa el Fnaa square. In a land with plenty of traditions like Morocco, constantly exposed to the new ways of life and the everlasting American dream, is important to re-think the past and ensure a future where roots give strength to the branches but do not prevent new flowers from blossoming.

Le Corsaire Ballet in Rialto Cinema, Casablanca

If you are a bit short of money to go to the Bolshoi Moscow Opera House and watch a ballet before going to sleep in your gorgeous room in the grand Metropole hotel don't worry, because the team of Casablanca travel guide knows just what you need. Cinema Rialto is opening its doors on Sunday 17th November at 15h30 to broadcast live the ballet "Le Corsaire" from Russia. Sure is not the same thing as to be in the Bolshoi, an experience that I had when I lived in Russia, but the advantage of the big screen is that you can focus more on appreciating the detail of movement and you save enough money to go drinking for a month.
"Le Corsaire" is a history of love between one pirate and one girl from a harem a bit 'haram', based on the poem of Lord Byron, the piece is well known by ballet lovers and lasts for about 3 hours.
If you dont really appreciate ballet you can go just simply for the pleasure of visiting the Rialto Cinema itself, a cavernous jewel of art-deco style.
Prices are 250dhs balcon, 150dhs orquesta and 100 dhs for students.

French Institute Cinema: "My Land" by Nabil Ayouch

L'Institut Français de Casablanca is one of the main cultural hubs of our beloved economic capital.  Even if its just a tiny proportion of the population, the demand is steadily growing for quality exhibitions, theatre and generally any kind of cultural activity other than watching the unavoidable Barça matches. Yesterday 14th of November we had the opportunity to go to watch "My Land", the latest production of acclaimed Franco-moroccan director Nabil Ayouch, widely known for having won many international prizes with "Les Chevaux de Dieu". For a modest 15 dhs you got to see the movie and a very interesting round table with Nabil Ayouch himself, quick, witty and deep, and looking like an eternal teenager.

"My Land" is a documentary about the most (in) famous tragedy in modern history: the Israeli-palestinian conflict. With testimonies from both sides, Arabs and Jewish, Nabil explores the present and the past of those two communities that once lived in peace and that international powers forced into hatred with the famous UN resolution 181 in 1947. The film is intense and the audience was very much moved by the Palestinian people. Being a mix of Jewish mother and Moroccan father, Nabil is well prepared to present the views with an objective approach that allows the viewer to draw its own conclusions.

Eglise Sacré Coeur de Casablanca...an unusual Art space

The former Cathedral of Casablanca is not your usual temple. It was built in 1930 in some neo-gothic-deco style that is not completely unpleasant for the eye and reminds for some reason the pure white churches that you find in some Greek islands. With the independence of Morocco in 1956 the building ceased all religious functions and became a cultural center where regular exhibitions are held in a space like no other. The interior is neglected yet charming, worth a visit also because is situated in the quiet Parque de la Ligue Arabe, which is also neglected and derelict, but with some rebel trees that refuse to die. Entrance is free.

Instituto Cervantes: Foodjects Exhibition

The Instituto Cervantes of Casablanca, the organism that promotes Spanish language and culture all over the world, organizes quality exhibitions every month. Yesterday November 7th was inaugurated “Foodjects” by Martín Azua who aims to show how the reputed Spanish kitchen has influenced designers to create successful objects that are now part of our daily lifestyle. Products used by celebrity chef Ferran Adriá, dishes, pottery, and a curious spoon with holes to eat jelly and loose the liquid. The opening was packed with curious people including Gatsby that fully enjoyed the company of the kind Director of the Instituto Maria Dolores López and the lovely cultural attaché Laura Gutierrez. Spanish restaurant La Cocina offered a cocktail including delicious croquetas, montaditos de jamon and some other delicacies. Of course Gatsby went straight to the white sangria and had to leave when was showing signs that could end up dancing on top of the table.
