Italian restaurant Circolo Degli Italiani

With italian restaurants it happens a bit the same as with the chinese ones: if you hear italian around you, you're in the right place. People were talking to me a lot about the 'real' place where italian meet to eat and discuss, so at the end, being italian myself, I gave it a try.
The outside is a little bit less than impressive, in fact it looks a lot like a pet prison. On the contrary the interior is quite cozy, with big canvas hanging on the walls and plenty of wine bottles around; the general impression is not luxurious, but rather a familiar place where you feel completely at ease and safe, kind of your grandma's house. The people inside were all quite normal, almost chic. Some ladies who lunch, a group celebrating in the private room, some couples... nothing to complain about that. In fact it makes a perfect choice for groups since there are quite a few round tables. On the menu you find all the italian dishes you may like, from the salads and mozzarella-pomodoro, homemade pastas, meats, fish and pizzas. I tried the burrata, which is a lot like mozzarella but more creamy inside, and it was truly delicious, if somehow a bit expensive, 90 dhs; it makes a perfect dish to share. I couldnt find the most typical pizza, the prosciutto, and I had to order the one with Parma ham on it, that of course becomes always very salty if you cook it, and only people with bad taste ask for, but I gave it a chance: big mistake. The thin crusty base was ok but no ressemblance at all with a pizza napolitana, of course if you haven't tried the good one in Italy on a regular basis, you'll find this one ok, still, the closest one in Casablanca remains the pizza from Da Gino (only the one in Gauthier), and also good the one from Bacco et Venere (also in Gauthier). I'm a big fan of filled pasta so I ordered the ravioli with salmon: they were good but way too much sauce, which probably people like, still I couldnt find any italian flavour on it. Tasty, but very heavy. The dessert was completely my fault, I always ask for tiramisu, and in fact I saw some passing by and looked amazing, just comme il faut, still I wanted to push them and ask for Cassata siciliana. Total dissaster, just a cold melting sweet thing most likely only appreciated by child. The prices are fair and there is wine (glass of red 45 dhs), but my poor choice left me with mixed feelings, I will have to give it another try, and I order better.

Art: Fatima Mazmouz

Gallerie FJ (Fatma Jellal) has organised an exhibition of controversial artist Fatima Mazmouz. Fatima explores the perception of the female human body in its own culture, Islam. One of her major works is the study of her own pregnancy through a series of photographs, always shocking and beautiful at the same time. The shapes, colors, textures, and subject matter provides insight beyond words, offering a window into the past, and a microcosmic view of the issues and experiences that shape so many women in Morocco today.

The Indian: Spanish Tapas in Maarif

Yes we know, weird choice of a name for a place that is 100% spanish ambiance and tapas in the heart of Maarif in Casablanca. Dont let that put you down and give it a chance; the owners are the old managers of famous La Cocina, and they created something very special in this reduced space that reminds us very much of any place in Barcelona in which you hear spanish, you eat spanish and you act spanish (meaning you are loud), but of course you smoke american and you pay in dirhams :) . It is perfect for an easy afterwork or for a secret love-date, since it is still quite unknown. The lighting is good, the music does not disturb you and the prices are fair. We tried the tortilla de patatas and it was truly genuine, just like my grandma does it, not like the spanish omelette that they try to do in Morocco or France adding some species for no purpose at all that only kill the original flavour. We also loved the chicken croquetas, and specially the patatas bravas... very very good. For pig lovers there's all you need, spanish ham and also deep fried Morcilla (boudin noir/pig's blood) mmmm delicious. We arrived a bit early but the place really came to life around 20h, and when we left at 22 there was no place for a needle.

Price: from 50 dhs to 200 dhs (how much can you eat/drink?)

Dance: Work is all the time in progress

Spend a pleasant evening in Casablanca watching the eclectic art of the group "work is all the time in progress" a joint venture of the brothers Atbane, Younes and Zouhir, plus newcomer Aziz Nadif; inspired and educated under the master choreographer Khalid Benghrib.
Their art is a mix of contemporary dance and music always in search of new forms of expression. They arise questions about the social problems of becoming an artist in Morocco, challenging our minds but always with a humoristic touch.

Brunch alert: Rick's Cafe

So you're looking for the best Sunday brunch in Casablanca, but at the same time you think that Rick's cafe its too obvious a choice, and on top of everything you think that the whole thing must be fake since the film was not shot in Morocco...Open your mind. Ricks cafè is already and institution here in Casablanca, in fact they just celebrated its 10th anniversary not long ago; the deco its superb, the waiters are spot on and about the best you can find in Morocco, and the food is always fresh and -to Casablanca standarts- not expensive. So when my american friend rang me to propose me Sunday brunch I was like: eehh...ok...let's play the tourist. How wrong I was, the place is spectacular and super chill-out, some moroccan couples, some foreigners, everyone casual chic (there is actually a dress code to follow); none of those over-excited people with camera... actually I was the only one taking photos.
The brunch is reserved for the first floor, that is way cooler than the lower floor. On the brunch menu there's pretty much everything you are dreaming of right now: eggs benedict, omelettes with whatever ingredients you may like, ham, cheeses (parmesano, roqueford, gouda, etc), grilled potatoes with some kind of beef strogonoff, tagliatelle with seafood sauce...shall I continue? and then of course you've got the fresh orange juice 'a volonte', milk with cacao, cafe, tea, cereals, homemade yogurt, strawberry cake, pain au chocolat, french toast with maple syrup...well let`s say that the choice is larger than your appetite, whatever your weight may be. And all that at 160 dirhams, yes there's no mistake, 160 dhs for a king's brunch, so I guess...I'll see u there next Sunday.

The flavour will be tipical spanish Flamenco with a touch of medieval oud; all of the musicians are winners of several prizes of guitar and chord instruments. Abdelkader is an accomplished guitarrist and also the organiser of the "Festival International de Cordes Pincées de Tours" and  the "Festival International de Guitare Mosaïque de Casablanca ". The three components of Trio Arabesque, Assma Rachidi, Redouane Saioud and Hicham Madane all come from the conservatory of Rabat and each of them excel in their art. Michel Gendre is the most famous oud player in the whole France, specialises in old music and music of the Renaissance, and will play along the gorgeous Elvira a collection of sephardic music that will for sure move the audience.

Burger in Casablanca? Gourmet Burger

Seems to be the trend these days, burger places pop out of nowhere invading every corner of Casablanca...and we love it! Nothing better than going out for having meaty meat, when you're really in the mood and you can't have one is worst than a drug. So we tried this new little restaurant called Gourmet Burger, that is a chain already established in Rabat and is already very successful here in our white town. Altough considered by some people to be fast food, we rather think that having a burger can be a special time between friends, and even so anti-romantic that can be cool for a date.
Gourmet Burger is located in a tiny street close to Bv d'Anfa, you spot the place at once, it stands out with its very clean and modern style, just 'comme il faut'. You can remain on the first level and check how your order is made in the open and spotless kitchen, or you can go for a more intimate experience in the mezzanine.
In the menu: two sizes of burgers, every topping you can dream of in case you want compose your own, or if you're lazy to think they propose some burgers with different styles; they all come with fries and a mini (decorative) salad. The small ones are around 40-50 dhs and the big ones between 60 and 100. We tried the american one with pickle cheese and fried egg. I was surprised they didnt ask how cooked I wanted the steak (it arrived medium, but I would have prefered it 'blue' or rare). Ten points less. Other thing did not convince us was that we asked for mayonnaise and they brought one but was not home made, the usual Hellman's with its particular artificial taste. But the presentation was very good and the place is quite cozy with all those wood tables and Charles Eames chairs; nonetheless the lighting is a bit agressive and had no music as background, but they just opened so it may -or may not- improve with time. They do not have alcohol license.

Dont miss this concert: L'Esprit de Grenade

How to spend an evening without breaking the bank in Casablanca? Very easy thanks to our friends in the French Institute. Inside the specials of SIEL Casablanca (the famous book exhibition) there are events almost everyday. This concert is one not to miss. Françoise Atlan et l’orchestre arabo-andalous de Fès will be most likely amazing, especially due to the reduced size of the theater we are sure it will make the whole auditorium vibrate. Françoise Atlan explores with her judeo-arabic music themes that unfortunately are not in fashion anymore: respect, tolerance, cohabitation of religion and credos. She has been in the famous Fez Festival of Sacred Music and other festivals like les Suds à Arles or the Festival d’art lyrique d’Aix-en-Provence, and she is also the artistic director of the Festival des Andalousies Atlantiques of Essaouira.

Reading and Acting: Othello, The Moor of Venice

What to do in Casablanca when the sun does not want to shine? Villa des Arts has come to the rescue with a series of theatrical readings acted by no more than 3 people. If we really enjoyed the last one, The Little Prince, the next 18 of March we can suffer along with Othello, The Moor of Venice, a well known tragedy written by William Shakespeare around 1603. Othello is one of those pieces that never go out of fashion, since the main themes of racism, love, jealousy and betrayal, are unfortunately as alive today as 500 years ago. Basically is the story of Othello, and admired moorish prince, resident of Venice, equally respected and hated for its military conquests. If anyone out there hasnt read or seen any of the thousand adaptations on screen and theater we suggest upgrading their soul for a little 20 dhs and enjoy this very intense piece of art.
Organised by Hassan El Jaï, actor and theater teacher along with the Compagnie l’Aparté.

Concert: "Le Soleil Brille pour Tout le Monde?"

Time to go out in Casablanca. The French Institute is bringing us a music concert that is worth skipping the afterwork mojitos. The poetry of Jacques Prevert meets the irreverence of slam music, the result? You'll see.
Autodidact, born in Marseille, Frédéric Nevchehirlian began captivating thanks to its glowing words in parties "open mic" at the dawn of French slam. Then in concerts with his original group Vibrion (that was awarded discovery Printemps de Bourges 2005 FAIR 2008). Poetry pressed and compressed, abundant and rich at the same time, linking images that mark. Frederic uses
acoustic and electric guitar, cello and drums, and sings, shouts, whispers or declaims depending on the interpreted text.

The Little Prince reading in Villa des Arts

More good plans in Casablanca for children and adults alike. Chances are that you read The Little Prince when you were very young, and you probably keep a good memory of it, specially the snake digesting an elephant that looks like a hat. The book was published for the first time in 1943, and its the most widely known work of writer and pilot Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Though at first sight can be taken for a children's book, The Little Prince is a very moving and deep novella that asks some very important and pertinent questions about the human being. Its a basic book that you should read at least once a year to keep the good spiriths high and regain hope on mankind.

“You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed.”

La Villa des Arts, the artistic branch of the ONA Fondation, proposes a series of acted readings chosen by Hassan El Jaï, with the help of La Compagnie Aparté, with a very simple theater scene: a maximum of 3 actors.
Number of places are limited so we suggest you arrive in advance if the crazy driving in Casablanca permits it.
The performance will take place on Tuesday 11 of February at 20h00 in the Villa des Arts de Casablanca.

Inspiring and fun theater in Casablanca: Dialy

Le Studio des Arts Vivants has decided to break all taboos with this piece of theater that will be represented the 8th of February in its premises. We apologise for the short notice, but sometimes its complicated to find the source of information. Dialy is the moroccan version of the world famous "The Vagina Monologues" written by Eve Ensler in 1996 and that have ever since has shocked -and inspired- audiences. Dialy is the result of the conversations between 150 women in its more intimate experiences, everyday life, sexual life, hammam time etc.. part cheeky and insolent, the piece on stage is not necessarily welcomed on the first place but the public grows little by little so it comes to appreciate the message beyond . Vagina, a word that bothers because it refers to all the taboos of our society, and specially in Morocco. The word, without even knowing what the play is about in reality, challenges and disturbs the spirits who see the subversive if not indecent. Dialy is a total must for everyone who whishes to live with us here in 2014, and wants to develop a healthy relation with its own body and the very fabric of society.
The piece will be acted in darija, the colloquial moroccan language, with subtitles in french for the less fluents like yours truly.
Reading: Dialy by Cie Theatre Aquarium (with the support of The French Institute) Text: Maha SANO Directed by: Naima ZITAN
Actresses: Nuria Benbrahim; Farida Bouazzaoui; Amal Ben Haddou

What to see in Casablanca: Villa des Arts

Looking for the perfect place for a romantic date? Forget all the coffee shops and snob terraces, bring your date to the Villa des Arts for an special meeting that will last in your memories: "in our first date, Mustapha took me to a museum", sounds better to me than "we went to starbucks". Villa des Arst is a heavenly place in the very center of Casablanca, and they usually have on show nice exhibitions...and barely anyone looking at them. Split in two floors, this old Art Deco house, that dates from 1934, has also a permanent cute collection, and belongs now to the ONA Foundation. The place promotes contemporary art and other purposes, if you want you can even rent it for a party in the most pure Gatsby style. The garden is specially peaceful and we miss not having a little coffee shop on the side which be truly amazing. The entry is free and makes a good stop for tourists and residents alike.

Easy Bar in Casablanca: Bar du Titan

If you're looking for the best plans in Casablanca you just found our favorite one. We've been going for a while to the Bar du Titan since we discovered, and it just gets better and better. "Decontracté", easygoing, cheap, so uncool that is cool, mixed people going there, from the usual alcoholic to pretty french girls, Bar du Titat belongs to everyone. Located in a street very close to Le Marché Central, Le Bar du Titan is the place where you should go with your real friends, just to sit down, enjoy some wine (bottle of Cuvee President 110 dhs, unbeatable!), and very very good tapas. No Chanel bags contest here. They've got probably the best patatas bravas in town...and at 18 dhs are quite a grab, quiche with real pork, marinated chicken, curry samosas, tortilla de patatas, moules al pil-pil, marinated anchovies, even the caesar salad is good. The place is quite small, about 10 little tables, and gets quite crowded from 20h00, but the good news is that you can book a table. Its the perfect place for an afterwork without bling-bling. It may sound superflous, but even the toilets are spotless, and that for some strange reason make us think that the kitchen is safe. So basically a winning place where you can have a good time without breaking your bank account. Since its very close to La Bodega, about 2 minutes walking, makes it a perfect choice to have drinks before the real fiesta loca, and because Le Bar du Titan closes at 23h00, everything fits perfectly.

Theater in Casablanca: La Chute (The Fall)

Good plans in Casablanca thanks to the French Institute. La Chute (The Fall) is the third novel of Albert Camus, written in the shape of dramatic monologues: a stranger tell us the story of his life from success to misery in an analogy that englobes the whole human race. This was one of the favourite pieces of another existencialist, the great Sartre, and we are looking forward to see how the director Nabyl Lahlou and actress Sophia Hadi will pull this one out, since is not an easy piece.

Fine dining @Le 25 Casablanca

One of the best things to do in Casablanca is meet up with your friends and have a drink after a day of hard work and crazy driving. For one thing, that means that you survived one more day crossing the street in this great megalopolis. So a few days ago the team of Casamood and a bunch of our best friends went to try the new place in town, Le 25 Casablanca. The space used to host the old Maison Blanche, but we've been told that after a long legal battle to keep the name they decided to change the whole concept and review everything from the menu to the lighting. They've been listening carefully to what the customers had to say, so...did they improve? The bar is as cozy as ever, with the dim light that makes easy conversation for a couple of lovers or for a group of old friends. The black Mojito was excellent and came with a huge free selection of snacks, including mini burgers, around me there were gin and tonics, normal mojitos, selection of beers and lots of people who seemed to be as satisfied as myself. In fact the night was going so well we stayed for dinner. As an appetizer we asked for some jamon de jabugo (the best kind of Spanish raw ham) OMG it was delicious and melted in the mouth. At a price. But not even in Spain is easy to find good Jabugo in restaurants. I had the tuna tartar as starter and was beautifully served and in a generous portion, but the wine keep flooding and we like excess so I ordered a Filet de boeuf with foie-gras: it was a killer, so tender and perfectly (un) cooked. The burrata was also spectacular, and I saw a couple of steak tartar around me that looked good too. My friend ordered tagliatelle ai frutti di mare (seafood) and have to say I was greatly surprised with the quality of ingredients and the pasta served aldente, a rare thing is Morocco. I didn't want to see any dessert but one night is one night, and we had some ones that although were good, I find it hardly to describe them. So I guess I'll have to come back.
